Licences

Every piece of animal research needs a licence from the Home Office. In fact, they need three licences, because the laboratory itself and the scientists doing the research each need a licence before they can even apply for a 'project licence' for a particular piece of work.

Each year the Home Office publishes details of all the project licences it has awarded. These explain which animals are being used for which type of scientific research everywhere in the UK.
